Supplying Healthcare Assistants to HSE Hospitals — What Employers Must Check
When supplying Healthcare Assistants to Health Service Executive hospitals, compliance is not optional — it is critical for governance, audit readiness, and patient safety.
As Shrishti Mirchandani explains to employers, every HCA must already have the legal right to work in Ireland before they can be considered for placement. This includes EU/EEA citizenship or valid residence permissions such as Stamp 1G or Stamp 4, along with an in-date Irish Residence Permit where required.
Shrishti advises that beyond right-to-work checks, employers must ensure full compliance documentation is in place. This includes Garda Vetting, Occupational Health clearance, vaccinations, references, photo ID, and proof of address.
Qualifications are equally important. HCAs must hold QQI Level 5 and up-to-date training in Manual Handling, Patient Moving & Handling, Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, CPR, Fire Safety, and HACCP Level 2.
From an operational perspective, Shrishti notes that HSE hospitals do not provide additional training on-site. HCAs must arrive competent, punctual, and fully aware of their responsibilities within clinical environments while adhering to HSE and HIQA standards.
The key takeaway for employers is simple: only fully compliant, qualified, and work-ready HCAs should ever be supplied into HSE settings.
